The current Scott County courthouse was built in 1885 on the northeast corner of the square in Winchester. A message sent to county commissioner James Coultas reveals that not everyone approved the expenditure of $37,500. This post card reads: “To the County Commissioners of Scott County, you had better go slow in regard to building a new courthouse as the people of Scott will rebel against it. Keep out of trouble if you can, the majority is against it. By a committy[sic]” Adjusting for inflation, the cost today would be almost one million dollars! The building has proved to be a worthy investment, as it has served Scott County for over 125 years.
