HOW DO I LOVE THEE
"AN EVENING WITH ELIZABETH BARRETT
AND ROBERT BROWNING"
Friday Evening
October 9
7:00 pm
OLD SCHOOL MUSEUM
A bedridden invalid for much of her life, forbidden to marry by her Victorian father, already past the age at which a woman was considered a spinster, Elizabeth Barrett would have had little hope or prospects of marriage. But when some of her poetry caught the eye of her younger fellow- poet Robert Browning, he was immediately smitten. Never one to shrink in the face of impossible odds, Robert not only met and wooed Elizabeth but eventually convinced her to elope with him to Italy. The story of this fascinating courtship is the subject of this evening’s two-person presentation, featuring Sherri Mitchell and Robert Seufert. Drawing upon letters, poems, and the 1930 Rudolf Besier play “The Barretts of Wimpole Street, How Do I Love Thee?” Is a loving recreation of the unfolding relationship of two remarkable people.

"Every town has a route of origin. It might be an old Native American trail, a wagon road, a stagecoach route, or an interstate highway, and technically, it might not even be a road. It could be a railroad line. Our rivers and canals had landings and ferry crossings that became fertile ground for taverns and stores and blacksmith shops, many of them seeds that sprouted into villages and towns. Eventually, enough had sprouted to form the state of Illinois."— Gary Marx, Co-Author of "Illinois Trails and Traces: Portraits and Stories Along the State's Historic Routes"
